WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Yesterday saw the quarterfinals of the ACCHL Tournament in at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex. Eight teams came to compete for a championship, however only four could advance to the semi-finals. Those four teams were NC State, Wake Forest, Georgetown and Virginia.

No. 3 Virginia and No. 6 George Washington were the first two teams to play in the tournament and it was an entertaining one. Up 4-1 at the start of the third period, Virginia appeared to be on cruise control to an easy win. However, George Washington refused to go down without a fight, rallying late to spark a comeback which ultimately fell short. Virginia advanced to the semi-finals with a final score of 4-3.

The No. 1 NC State took on No. 8 St. Joseph’s in what can only be deemed as making a statement. St. Joseph’s held NC State to just a 2-1 deficit going into the third period. However, NC State turned on the fans and blew St. Joseph out of the water in an 11-1 beatdown. NC State advanced to the semi-finals as a favorite to win the tournament.

No. 4 Wake Forest welcomed No. 5 UNC-Charlotte to their home arena in what was the best game of the evening. Wake Forest had more than 50 shots-on-goal but struggled to find the back of the net. Wake Forest found themselves down 2-1 going into the third period. However a late goal allowed to Wake Forest to tie it up and force overtime. Nearing the conclusion of overtime, Wake Forest’s leading scorer Drew Gebhardt forced one into the net scoring the game winning goal.

For the final game of the night, #2 Georgetown faced off against the #7 Virginia Tech. Much like NC State, Georgetown made their case as a favorite for the finals. The first period was uneventful but it didn’t stay like that for long. Georgetown dominated and advanced to the semi-finals with a 9-2 victory over Virginia Tech.
