Is Jimmy Garoppolo the answer to the 49ers problems?

Nine weeks into the 2017 NFL season the San Francisco 49ers are currently 0-8 and tied with Cleveland Browns for the worst record in the NFL. On October 30, 2017 the New England Patriots shocked the NFL by trading their star backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers for a second round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan talked about the decision to bring in Garoppolo.

“We didn’t bring Jimmy here to save our season. We brought him here to improve our organization.”

Garoppolo is definitely a solid quarterback with a 68.3% completion percentage last season. Completing 43 of his 63 passes and 4 touchdowns in 2016 with a perfect 2-0 record as a starter. Garoppolo also has two Super Bowl wins in three seasons as backup to Tom Brady.

However, Garoppolo can only do so much as a quarterback. The numbers Garoppolo put up in 2016 for the Patriots came with a solid offensive line. The 49ers on the other hand have struggled recently with their offensive line. Just last weekend the 49ers offensive line allowed five total sacks, three of which came in the first half, in their 33-10 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

You can’t allow your quarterback to constantly get hit and then expect him to put up amazing numbers. If the 49ers can fix their issues with the offensive line then Jimmy Garoppolo can definitely turn the struggling organization around. Once he learns and understands the 49ers scheme I have no doubt that Kyle Shanahan and Jimmy Garoppolo will lead to 49ers to multiple playoff runs and division titles.
