Frank Viola has accomplished many things throughout his career, winning a World Series with the Minnesota Twins and a World Series MVP. However one thing he hasn't done is coach independent baseball, he's checking that off his list this season.

Viola was named the Pitching Coach for the High Point Rockers of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball for their inaugural season in 2019. In his first season with the Rockers, Viola has a talented pitching core to coach.

"We're going to pound the strike zone," Viola said about his expectations for his pitchers. "With the defense that Jamie (Keefe) and Billy (Horn) have for us, they're going to make all the plays. The more you pound the strikes, the more the ball is put in play and the more the ball is put in play, the more play is going to be made behind us.."

The Rockers have an impressive group of Pitchers, consisting of many veterans and former Major League Baseball Pitchers.

"I'm excited," The former Cy Young winner said. "We have a bunch of veterans starting with (Matt) Sergey, (Seth) Maness, Seth Simmons and Paul Clemens too. We're looking at good nucleus of starting possibilities and the bullpen has a bunch of established guys.

"I like where we're at right now, it's early but hopefully we'll keep these guys together for a little bit and see if we can get out of the gate quick."

The Rockers are looking to make an impact in their inaugural season. Opening Day at their new stadium is May 2nd at BB&T Point in High Point, NC.
