Is Danny Etling The Future Of The Patriots?

In the seventh and final round in the 2018 NFL draft, the New England Patriots selected QB Danny Etling of LSU. The Patriots were looking for another QB to be the successor to the aging Tom Brady and they hope Etling is the guy to lead the Patriots in the future.

Etling started his college career at Purdue where he played two seasons and threw for a total of 2490 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Etling then transferred to LSU where he completed 325 of 544 passes, threw for 4586 yards, 27 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

Etling’s scouting report has a lot of negatives but he also has some solid positives as well.

  • Protects the football (had only two interceptions last year).
  • Adequate touch on intermediate passes.
  • Stands in the pocket and scans the field.
  • Comfortable in pro-style offense.
  • Able to create when plays break down.

  • Doesn’t keep his feet square in throwing motion.
  • Drops his hand to throw, resulting in slow throwing motion.
  • NFL caliber talent all around him and failed to produce.
  • Struggled to get the ball downfield to speedy targets.
  • Plays stiff and slower than his 4.76-second 40 time.

A lot of people disagree with this pick by the Patriots, however if you look at the positives from Etling’s scouting report he does have solid traits. It’s going to take time but Danny Etling has two veteran QB’s to learn from in Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer. Etling is also familiar with two of the Patriots draft picks. Ja’Whaun Bentley was Etling’s teammate at Purdue and the two remained close to one another after Etling transferred to LSU. While playing in the SEC for LSU, Etling actually played against his new teammate Duke Dawson. Give Etling time and he’ll be a solid QB and eventually he will become a starter.
