The ESPYs are usually a night where the world's best athletes all come together to celebrate their accomplishments, however not everything is about sports. The night is also about giving back and celebrating those who have done incredible things in the world.

Pat Tillman was a safety for the Arizona Cardinals from 1998-2001. Following the September 11th terrorist attacks, Tillman decided to hang up his helmet and put on a different uniform. Tillman joined the United States Army Rangers and served several tours before he was killed in Afghanistan in a friendly fire incident.

Today, the sports world honors Tillman by having the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the ESPYs. The award honors an individual with a strong connection to sports who has served others in a way that honors Tillman's legacy.

This years recipient is Jake Wood, former tackle/guard for the University of Wisconsin and a Co-Founder of Team Rubicon. After hanging up his helmet for the Wisconsin Badgers, Wood joined the United States Marines as a member of the Second Battalion, Seventh Marine Regiment.

Fast forward to 2010, a terrible earthquake struck Haiti. Jake Wood was one of a few people to form a group to help the people of Haiti. Later on their mission in Haiti, that group became Team Rubicon. A disaster response team, consisting of veterans, first responders and civilians.

In just the last 90 days, Team Rubicon has had 19 field operations, 1783 members deployed and have helped 983 survivors.

Wood has devoted his life to helping others. Team Rubicon has a saying that they live by “Disasters are our business, veterans are our passion”. Wood's friend and fellow Marine, Clay Hunt tragically took his own life. Hunt originally found relief from his battles with PTSD when he was in Haiti and doing rescue operations. Since then Team Rubicon wanted to serve the needs of returning veterans by repurposing their training for deployments with Team Rubicon.
